Psoriasis Awareness Month: Meet Michelle
Michelle is a Korean-American, who is based in Los Angeles and working as a marketing manager. She shared her experience with psoriasis as part of Psoriasis Awareness Month this August.
What skin condition do you have?

I have plaque and guttate psoriasis. I was diagnosed about 3 years ago when I was entering the modelling industry. If I am completely honest, I’d say that psoriasis was probably the biggest reason I stopped pursuing a modelling career. But it was for the best and I am happy to be where I am now. :) All things happen for a reason.

When were you diagnosed with psoriasis? When/ how did you first notice something was different in your skin?

I was diagnosed back in 2019 and I noticed tiny little bumps all over my body. I was incorrectly diagnosed 3 times - being told it was pityriasis. I eventually got a biopsy done and was told I had plaque and guttate psoriasis.

What was it like living with this skin condition?

It was unbearable at first. It hits you the hardest because you have to accept the reality that this is a disease you are going to have to battle for the rest of your life. After swallowing that pill, I went straight into finding whatever I could to heal myself. Psoriasis is tough to manage because it looks very bad, but the mental and physical pain that comes with it can often times be worse.

What do you do to manage the symptoms?

Eat healthy, exercise, moisturise, always test new products, never give up!

Are there things that make the symptoms worse?

Alcohol, stress, anything inflammatory!

What have you had to change in your lifestyle to manage your psoriasis?

I’ve definitely stopped “partying” the way I used to. I exercise more and am more considerate and kind to myself.

What’s one thing you want people to know about (living with) psoriasis?

It’s not contagious. It’s unique. :)

What are your best sun protection tips?

SUNSCREEN IS YOUR BEST FRIEND!

How do you feel about your skin today?

I am thankful for my skin and body for getting me through each day.

What would you say to others who are struggling to feel comfortable in their skin?

You are not to blame. Your skin is not to blame. You are absolutely beautiful and your skin condition does not take away from that. My best advice to those struggling with their confidence is: use your insecurity, your “different-ness,” your pain and turn it into something beautiful. Your love for yourself will grow and others won’t be able to help but notice your courageousness. You live one life, don’t live it in the dark, afraid. Live it shining as bright as you can.
